Differences Between Refrigerated Air Dryers and Desiccant Air Dryers
There is only a slight difference in the names of refrigerated air dryers and desiccant air dryers, yet their performance varies tremendously. As the saying goes,
"A small discrepancy at the start leads to a huge error in the end." Please pay attention to the differences between refrigerated air dryers and desiccant air dryers when making purchases.
Advantages of Refrigerated Air Dryers
No consumption of compressed air. Most users do not require an extremely low dew point for compressed air. Using refrigerated dryers can save energy compared with desiccant dryers.
No valve wear. Desiccant dryers suffer problems with switching valves. Although refrigerated dryers are also equipped with valves, such components barely experience wear.
No regular replenishment or replacement of desiccant required.
Low operating noise. Desiccant dryers generate noise during the pressure relief of adsorption towers. In compressor rooms, the operating sound of refrigerated dryers is generally inaudible.
Simple routine maintenance; only timely cleaning of the filter screen on the automatic drainer is needed.
Low requirements for pre-treatment of incoming air. A standard oil-water separator can satisfy the inlet air quality requirements of refrigerated dryers.
Compared with desiccant dryers, compressed air treated by refrigerated dryers can only achieve a pressure dew point above 0°C. Therefore, the drying depth is far inferior to that of desiccant dryers.
Classification by Desiccant Regeneration Method
There are two main types of desiccant air dryers: heatless regenerative desiccant dryers and heated regenerative desiccant dryers.
Heatless desiccant dryers operate based on isothermal adsorption and are also known as Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) dryers.
Heated desiccant dryers work on isobaric adsorption and are also called Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA) dryers.
In practical applications, there is another type known as the micro-heat dryer. Visually, it also heats regeneration gas. However,
the regeneration gas it utilizes is dry air with low moisture content sourced from the unit itself, so it also falls under the category of Pressure Swing Adsorption dryers.
