Why Is There Such a Big Difference Between Refrigerated Air Dryers and Desiccant Air Dryers Though Both Are Drying Equipment
Refrigerated air dryers and desiccant air dryers are common compressed air drying equipment. During equipment selection,
it is necessary to understand their respective advantages and disadvantages and make a choice according to actual requirements.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Refrigerated Air Dryers
Advantages:
Refrigerated air dryers feature energy-saving performance.
a. No consumption of compressed air. For most users without stringent requirements on compressed air dew point, refrigerated air dryers are superior to desiccant air dryers.
b. No regular replenishment or replacement of desiccant required.
c. Low operating noise. Desiccant air dryers generate noise during pressure relief of adsorption towers, while the operating noise of refrigerated air dryers is generally inaudible inside the compressor room.
d. No valve component wear.
e. Simple routine maintenance; only periodic cleaning of the filter screen on the automatic drainer is required.
f. No special requirements for pre-treatment of incoming air and matched air compressors. A standard oil-water separator can meet the inlet air quality requirements of refrigerated air dryers.
g. The dryer has a self-cleaning effect on outlet air, meaning the treated air contains low solid impurities.
h. While discharging condensed water, part of the oil vapor can condense into liquid oil mist and be drained together with condensate.
Disadvantages:
Refrigerated air dryers can deliver 100% effective air supply. However, restricted by its working principle, the minimum achievable pressure dew point of outlet air is approximately 3°C.
Its performance is greatly affected by inlet air temperature: every 5°C rise in inlet temperature reduces refrigeration efficiency by 30% and significantly raises the air supply dew point.
The unit is also sensitive to ambient temperature.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Desiccant Air Dryers
Advantages:
a. Achievable compressed air pressure dew point down to -70°C.
b. Performance unaffected by ambient temperature.
c. Excellent filtration capacity capable of removing various impurities.
Disadvantages:
a. 6% compressed air consumption for regeneration.
b. Regular replenishment and replacement of desiccant are necessary.
c. Operating noise reaches 65 decibels.
