What are the structural characteristics of the filter housing

A filter housing generally consists of an upper section and a lower section. 

The upper part is called the filter cover, and the lower part is known as the filter bowl.

The filter cover features a relatively complex structure. It serves as the inlet and outlet passage for compressed air, and the filter element is suspended and fixed onto the filter cover. 

The filter cover is equipped with an air inlet and an air outlet, whose nominal diameters shall match those of the air transmission pipelines. 

After air enters the filter, it can only flow out from the outlet by passing through the filter element. Accordingly, there must be no leakage points between the inlet and outlet; otherwise, air short-circuiting will occur.

To facilitate filter element replacement, an isolation bypass valve is installed across the inlet and outlet pipelines. 

The valve remains closed during normal operation and opens to bypass compressed air during maintenance or filter element replacement.

The filter bowl has two main functions. First, it provides sealing to ensure compressed air flows only within the filter housing and follows the designated flow direction. 

Second, it collects condensed liquids such as separated water and oil. A manual or automatic drain device is fitted at the bottom of the filter bowl for timely discharge of contaminants.

Since the unfolded filtration area of the filter element is far larger than the cross-sectional area of the filter bowl, the bowl diameter does not need to be determined by calculating the empty vessel flow velocity. Generally, 

the filter bowl diameter only needs to allow convenient removal and installation of the filter element. 

Its length should be approximately 1.25 to 1.5 times that of the filter element, preventing the filter element from being submerged by collected liquid.

The filter cover and filter bowl can be connected via threads or flanges. Flange connections are commonly adopted for high-flow filters. 

Whichever connection type is used, it must deliver reliable sealing and allow easy disassembly for rapid filter element replacement.

High-flow filters are usually fitted with several up to dozens of filter elements, making element arrangement critical. Normally, any three adjacent filter elements shall be arranged in an equilateral triangle, 

and the center-to-center distance between two neighboring filter elements shall be no less than 1.25 times the filter element diameter. This ensures sufficient flow space for air between filter elements.

A differential pressure gauge is typically mounted across the inlet and outlet pipelines to monitor the pressure drop across the filter element while the unit is online.
