How to efficiently and stably obtain high-purity nitrogen from air
A nitrogen generator is a complete set of equipment that uses clean compressed air as raw material and extracts high-purity nitrogen directly from air via physical separation technologies.
It represents the most economical, efficient and stable on-site nitrogen production method in modern industry, widely adopted in nearly all manufacturing sectors including electronics,
chemical industry, food processing, pharmaceuticals and metallurgy.
How does a nitrogen generator "filter out" high-purity nitrogen from air?
Main components of air: 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, water, dust and a small amount of other gases.
Nitrogen generators rely purely on physical separation without chemical reactions. Three mainstream technologies are available:
PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) Nitrogen Generation
Centered on carbon molecular sieves (CMS). Under pressurization, the molecular sieve preferentially adsorbs oxygen, water and carbon dioxide. Since nitrogen is barely adsorbed,
it flows out directly as product gas. When pressure is released, the molecular sieve undergoes desorption and regeneration to enable cyclic operation.
Membrane Separation Nitrogen Generation
It adopts hollow fiber membranes featuring different permeation rates for oxygen and nitrogen. Oxygen penetrates the membrane rapidly while nitrogen is enriched.
Cryogenic Air Separation Nitrogen Generation
Air is liquefied, and nitrogen is separated from oxygen through rectification based on their boiling point differences.
Key Factors for Efficient, Stable and High-Purity Nitrogen Production
1. Clean Front-End Air Source
The air flows through the process: Air compressor → Air receiver → Filter → Air dryer → Nitrogen generator.
Water removal: Refrigerated air dryer / Desiccant air dryer
Oil removal: Three-stage precision filters + activated carbon oil removal unit
Dust removal: High-precision filters
Oil and moisture will permanently poison molecular sieves and cause irreversible purity degradation.
2. Stable Operating Pressure
The optimal working pressure ranges from 0.7~1.0 MPa. An air receiver and pressure regulator must be equipped to prevent purity fluctuations caused by unstable pressure.
3. On-line Monitoring & Automatic Control
The system automatically adjusts adsorption/regeneration cycles according to nitrogen purity, pressure and gas consumption.
It automatically vents substandard nitrogen and triggers alarms for abnormal pressure or equipment faults, preventing unqualified nitrogen from entering the gas supply system.
Equipped with fully automatic PLC control, twin towers operate alternately to deliver continuous and stable gas supply 24 hours a day.
