Why Does an Air Compressor System Require an Air Receiver?

An air receiver is more than just supporting equipment for compressed air. It serves as a vital supplement to your compressed air system,

acting as temporary storage capacity to meet peak system demand and helping optimize overall system efficiency.

Benefits of Using an Air Receiver

Regardless of the scale of your compressed air system, an air receiver delivers multiple advantages to your compressed air installation:

  1. Compressed Air Storage
As mentioned above, the air receiver is auxiliary compressed air equipment that provides temporary storage for compressed air before it flows into piping networks or other components within the compressor system.
  2. Stabilize System Pressure

The air receiver acts as a buffer between the compressor and any pressure fluctuations caused by variable air demand. It ensures stable compressed air supply while enabling the system to satisfy operational requirements, including peak demand.

  3. The stored air inside the receiver can even be utilized when the compressor is offline. It also helps avoid overpressure and short cycling of the compressor system.

  4. Prevent Unnecessary System Wear

When the compressed air system demands more air, the compressor motor cycles to meet the load. If an air receiver is installed in the system,

  5. stored air inside the tank prevents excessive motor loading/unloading and reduces compressor cycling frequency.

  6. Reduce Compressed Air Waste

Compressed air is lost every time the compressor cycles on and off, owing to venting of the sump which discharges compressed air. Since the air receiver lowers the number of compressor start-stop cycles,

  7. the volume of compressed air wasted during cycling can be significantly reduced.

  8. Condensation and Humidity Reduction

Moisture existing in the system in the form of water vapor condenses during air compression. Although other compressor auxiliary devices (namely aftercoolers and air dryers) are specially designed to treat humid air,

  9. the air receiver also helps lower moisture content in the system. The receiver collects condensed water inside a moisture trap, allowing quick drainage whenever necessary.
